Women's Hair Loss Information

As emotionally devastating as hair loss can be for some men, the effect often pales in comparison to hair loss in women. When hair loss occurs in women, at any age, the traumatizing feelings and emotions may be overwhelming. The good news is there is help available.

Although hair loss is perceived as a strictly male “thing”, it is much more common for women than most people think. About 30 million adult women in North America experience thinning hair and hair loss. One in every five women in the United States experiences hereditary genetic hair loss, called women's pattern hair loss. Women with women's pattern hair loss will usually retain hair along the front hairline, but can expect an all over thinning of the top and crown areas of the head.

Although women's pattern hair loss causes close to 95% of all hair loss, there are other causes too:

OTHER CAUSES

Medical/Cancer: Two types of cancer treatments can cause hair loss: chemotherapy and radiation. Fortunately, most of the time hair loss from chemotherapy and radiation is temporary. You can usually expect to regrow a full head of hair six months to a year after you stop treatment, though your hair may temporarily be a different shade or texture.
Hormonal/Telogen effiuvium: Caused by Physical stress, emotional stress, thyroid abnormalities, medications and hormonal causes normally associated with women.
Trichotillomania: Trichotillomania is hair loss caused by compulsive pulling and or twisting of the hair until it breaks off. The hair may be lost in round patches or diffusely across the scalp. Other hairy areas may be plucked, such as the eyebrows, eyelashes, or body hair.
Alopecia areata: Generally thought to be an autoimmune disorder. Causes "patchy" hair loss, often in small circular areas in different areas of the scalp.
Alopecia totalis:  Total hair loss of the scalp, (an advanced form of alopecia areata).
Alopecia universalis: Hair loss of the entire body, (also an advanced form of alopecia areata).
Traction alopecia: Hair loss caused by physical stress and tension on the hair such as prolonged use of hair weaving, corn rows etc. Done too tightly on weak hair these can cause permanent hair loss.
Anagen effiuvium: Generally due to internally administered medications, such as chemotherapy agents, that poison the growing hair follicle.
